Perioperative Nurse Coordinator - Orthopedics & Sports Medicine

LOCATION:  Hartford County, CT

ORGANIZATION:  Acute Care Hospital

JOB SUMMARY: 

The Orthopedic Sports Medicine Perioperative Coordintor is responsible and accountable for providing clinical and administrative leadership to direct the intra-operative care to orthopedic surgical patients in partnership with the Nurse Manager. Is accountable for facilitating a collegial relationship between nurses, physicians and other healthcare providers and for obtaining maximum efficiency of the daily schedule and for achieving optimal patient outcomes. Obtains and allocates resources to ensure efficient, effective, and safe patient care, based on current standards. Coordinates with physicians and vendors, the acquisition of equipment needed related to specific procedures. Participates in data collection and activities that support quality outcome measures.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, BSN required, MSN preferred. In depth knowledge of and ability to implement the AORN Standards and Recommended Practices for Peri-operative nursing.

  • Experience: 3-5 years of experience in orthopedics and general operating room procedures. Previous management/supervisory experience preferred.

  • Licensure: Current Connecticut registration.

  • Certification: CPR, CNOR certification preferred.

  • Skills: Leadership -acts as professional role model. 

  • Demonstrated organizational, leadership, communication (written and verbal) competence.

  • Demonstrated problem solving and conflict resolution skills. 

  • Knowledge of regulatory and practice standards, such as DPH, Joint Commission, CMS and AORN.

  • Computer literacy, such as web based applications, e-mail, word and data applications, and the ability to adequately use, or learn to use, the hospital and department's computerized system and its associated devices.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage the department budget in partnership with the Nurse Manager.

  • Demonstrated ability to make complex decisions and accept accountability for outcomes.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT

  • Ability to implement daily schedule and control environment within room using established procedures of department under routine and emergency/stressful conditions. Good physical and mental health, high energy levels. 

  • Position requires ability to frequently lift objects more than 50 lbs., perform difficult manipulative and arm-hand steadiness coordination skills; bend, walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods; see objects closely and far away and hear normal sounds with some background noises. 

  • Position requires ability to concentrate on fine detail with interruption and attend to tasks for more than 60 minutes at a time. 

  • Individual must be able to understand and relate to theories behind several related concepts and remember multiple tasks given over long periods of time.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Operating rooms range from dimly to well lit dependent on procedure. 

  • Adequate equipment and supplies. Adherence to AORN Standards and Recommended Practices for Peri-operative Nursing. 

  • Employee may frequently be exposed to blood, body, tissues or fluids, and radiation. 

JOB DUTIES

  • Assures that staff is scheduled according to unit standards to provide the appropriate number of staff considering scope of practice, skills and competencies, patient needs and complexity of care.

  • Collaborates with the Nurse Manager and contributes to the efficient operation of the operating room to promote evidence based practice through the development of procedures and standards, and participation in quality improvement and research activities.

  • Assures that care delivered is safe, appropriate, high quality, and efficient, and is delivered with respect to the individual’s rights and preferences.

  • Collaborates with the Director, Human Resources (HR), and the Center for Nursing Education & Practice Innovation (CNEPI) to assure the appropriate orientation, education and training, credentialing, and continuing professional development of staff. 

  • Collaborates with the Nurse Manager to develop, implement, and monitor the budget, and manage equipment and materials, for the patient care unit or department.

  • Directs clinical operations to provide for deliverance of safe, cost efficient patient care for patients and creates an environment which promotes communication and collaboration among unit staff, physicians, and other healthcare personnel and hospital employees.

  • Participates in the recruitment, selection, and retention of personnel assigned to the patient care unit or Department in partnership with the Nurse Manager.
